A 'femidom' female condom fitted with fishhooks is being marketed in South Africa which has the highest incidence of rape in the world.
South African businesswoman Sonnet Ehlers, who presented her invention in the German capital Berlin this week, said: "Rape is a massive problem in South Africa and women who wear this may well be able to deter men.
"The woman inserts the device into their vagina and if they are raped the hooks embed themselves in the man's penis. It would be extremely painful and the only way to remove them is by going to a doctor which will mean the person ends up being arrested."
She added: "It will be in shops from October."
Around 55,000 rapes are reported in South Africa every year although experts believe that the real figure is much higher.
